Godparents are among the most important people at a christening, who make big promises to encourage their godchild to grow in faith and commit to helping them understand how to live their life in a Christian way.
A godparent (also known as a sponsor) in many denominations of Christianity, is someone who bears witness to a child’s christening and later is willing to help in its catechesis, as well as its lifelong spiritual formation.
Cash gifts, and more broadly, economic calculations, are ever-present in the everyday talk about godparenthood.
On the other hand, people experience uneasiness and anxiety over cash gifts.
Throughout the past years, the true meaning of godparents is changing. As some of the parents are seeing their kumare’s and kumpare’s in a different way.
When it comes to being a Filipino, Christening is a big deal for most parents. Their kumare’s and kumpare’s supposedly the second parents of their godchild.
Sadly, some parents are asking too much from the ninang or ninong of their child. We have already seen a series of this on social media.
And to add to the list is the viral story of Raevin Amante Bonifacio.
On his post on Facebook, Bonifacio shares a screenshot of his conversation with his “Kumare.”
In his caption, he stated what Godparent’s role for their Godchild.
Hence, he still gives his Godson a cash gift even though he doesn’t have to.
Upon receiving the cash gift worth two hundred fifty pesos, the parent of the child seems dismayed.
As she said that the child became sad because of the amount he received.
But then, Bonifacio said that maybe the child’s parent expected much that’s why they got dismayed.
And saddened at the same time but the child seems not.
