Stanley Tucci Lost Most Of His Appetite During Cancer Treatments: 'Everything Tasted Like Wet Cardboard'

Stanley Tucci has opened up and revealed that while going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer, he lost almost all of his appetite.

The 61-year-old actor said that the process was “horrible” during his interview with the New York Times.

Stanley revealed that on top of the loss of appetite, after three sessions of his treatments he was also experiencing vertigo and had multiple ulcers in his mouth.

Everything he ate, Stanley explained, tasted like “wet cardboard slathered with someone’s excrement.”

His biggest fear, he added, was that he’d lose his sense of taste: “I mean, if you can’t eat and enjoy food, how are you going to enjoy everything else?”

“It was hard because I could taste everything, but I couldn’t necessarily swallow,” he shared, remembering one instance where he tried steak Florentina. “I had to chew it for 10 minutes to get it down my throat … [sometimes] I just had to get rid of the food.”

However, despite his symptoms, Stanley didn’t want to stop working on his acclaimed CNN series, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy.

“There was no way I wasn’t going to make it,” he said. “I’ve wanted to tell for a long time the story of Italy and the disparate cuisine in every region.”

He also shared that he still enjoyed watching existing cooking shows amid his recovery though he noted it was “weird because even the smell of food then would just make me want to throw up.”

“But I liked watching them,” Stanley says. “I just wanted to learn more, live vicariously through them. It was a way I was going to have that once again.”

Stanley first opened up about his cancer in an interview earlier this year.
