'Venom 2' Director Talks About Must-See Credits Scene & Explains How It's Connected to Marvel Universe

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

Venom 2 is now in theaters, and audiences are clamoring about the Marvel movie!

The film, called Venom: Let There Be Carnage, is a sequel to 2018′s Venom, and centers around Venom, played by Tom Hardy.

In the movie, Eddie Brock attempts to reignite his career by interviewing serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who becomes the host of the symbiote Carnage and escapes prison after a failed execution.

Let There Be Carnage also features a mid-credits scene – and it’s a significant, must-see moment that leads to even more questions and speculation.

At the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Eddie and Venom flee to a desert island, and are watching television in bed. While watching, Venom says that he’s been keeping a secret from Eddie – “80 billion light-years” of knowledge as a symbiote. He asks Eddie if he would like a taste of that knowledge, and Eddie says yes.

Venom begins the mind-merge process, and time jumps. There’s a flash, and Eddie seemingly goes into shock. When he comes back to consciousness, he’s in a luxury resort and there’s a man in the bathroom asking what they’re doing in his room. Before he can answer, J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) appears on the room’s TV in a breaking news report similar to the one in the end credits scene for Spider-Man: Far From Home, revealing the identity of Spider-Man as Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. It ends with Venom licking the screen.

The scene leaves questions about what exactly happened to Venom and Eddie, and raises the possibility of altering their reality. It could also have something to do with Doctor Strange, and the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, or even an event caused by Avengers: Endgame. Either way, it reveals that Venom, Eddie and Spider-Man are all part of the same cinematic universe – which means they could meet in the upcoming No Way Home.

Director Andy Serkis addressed the scene in an interview with THR, confirming that it was in flux until the last minute.

“100 percent in flux, yeah. It couldn’t have been more in flux-y if you tried. (Laughs.) Yeah, of course, it was something that they talked about from before I even came on to the movie,” he said.

“There were moments where he [Spider-Man] was going to be in the story, potentially, and then he wasn’t. But no, we decided that we wanted to really examine the Venom-verse first. So as we were going through principal photography, the inevitable discussions had to be had, but it wasn’t until very, very late on that we reached the precise notion of the teaser that we wanted to lay in there.”
