'Rust' Armorer's Attorneys Allege Fatal Bullet May Have Been the Result of On-Set 'Sabotage'

New allegations are being made regarding the tragic shooting that took place on the set of Rust.

Last month, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed after a prop gun fired by Alec Baldwin struck her. The actor was not aware the gun was loaded while he was rehearsing for a scene.

The attorneys for the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Feed told NBC’s Today on Wednesday (November 3) that they’re investigating whether a live bullet was place in a box of dummy rounds with the intent of “sabotaging the set.”

“I believe that somebody who would do that would want to sabotage the set, want to prove a point, want to say that they’re disgruntled, they’re unhappy,” Hannah’s attorney Jason Bowles told the outlet. “And we know that people had walked off the set the day before.”

“I think you can’t rule anybody out at this point,” he continued. “We know there was a live round in a box of dummy rounds that shouldn’t have been there. We have people who had left the set, who had walked out because they were disgruntled. We have a time frame between 11 [a.m.] and 1 [p.m.], approximately, that day, in which the firearms at times were unattended, so there was opportunity to tamper with this scene.”

Authorities found at least one live .45 caliber round in the Rust prop truck last Friday. Hannah‘s second attorney, Robert Gorence, said that the truck “was completely unattended at all times, giving someone access and opportunity.”

NBC news mentioned in its report that it had not verified the attorneys’ claims that the ammunition was left unsupervised, though the Santa Fe sheriff’s investigation found 500 rounds of bullets that were a mix of dummies, blacks and what were believed to be live rounds.

Robert Gorence also emphasized that Hannah was stretched thin on the set of the movie, making it difficult for her to do her job as armorer.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza told Today that a great deal of the investigation centers on assistant director Dave Halls, who said the gun was safe, Hannah and Alec Baldwin.

Hannah said in a statement through her attorneys that she does not know how the live bullet got on set and also told investigators that no live ammunition is kept on set, per court documents.

The sheriff said last week he thinks it will be months before the investigation concludes, at which time the findings will be taken to the district attorney.

Last week, a report emerged that said producers on Rust were allegedly warned about safety issues on Dave Halls‘ previous film.
