Shonda Rhimes is opening up about Rege Jean Page‘s decision to leave Bridgerton.
The 31-year-old actor, who played Simon Basset in the first season of the show, announced that he would not be returning for season 2 back in April.
In a new interview with Variety, the TV mogul, who acts as an executive producer on the Netflix series, shared her thoughts on his exit.

“Rightfully, he said, ‘I signed up to do this one lovely story, this closed-ended storyline. I’m good!’ I don’t blame him for that. I think that he was really smart to leave the perfection as the perfection,” she told the outlet.
Shonda said that she was a bit taken aback from fans’ strong reactions to his announcement.
“My assumption of what people knew of romance novels was… I overestimated a great deal,” she explained, adding that the response “means success. But I do understand their despair.”
She also noted that while she had invited the actor back, she’s not so sure he’ll make another appearance on the show.
“And here’s why,” she explained. “He’s an enormous star now. As I like to say, the idea that we would write Regé to stand around in the background doesn’t make any sense at all to me. ‘What would he do?’ is what I like to say.”
