Queen Elizabeth‘s former lady-in-waiting Lady Pamela Hicks is looking back at an unexpected note she received from the monarch.
Pamela, a first cousin of the late Prince Philip, was a bridesmaid at the pair’s wedding in 1947. She went on to stay by Elizabeth‘s side once the young princess ascended to the throne in 1952.
In an interview with People, Pamela spoke with her daughter India Hicks about her experience with the 95-year-old monarch.

“I rather remember [Elizabeth] was cool as a cucumber as always at her wedding—just there, and the whole world going mad around her,” Pamela told the outlet.
Pamela was acting as a lady-in-waiting for the then-Princess when news came that Elizabeth‘s father, King George VI, had passed away.
“I remember going and hugging her. And then thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, She’s Queen’ — and going into a deep curtsy,” Pamela said.
She also remembered receiving a letter from the Queen after the death of her husband last year.
“One thing that was moving: When you wrote to [Elizabeth] after Prince Philip‘s death, she wrote back to you, saying, ‘Of course, you have known him longer than I,’ ” India recalled.
“Yes, she is doing fine,” Pamela replied. “She wrote and thanked me for her Christmas present. She remarked on her enormous extended family but said because of coronavirus, of course, they were a much-reduced but still large family party for Christmas.”
As for what she thought Queen Elizabeth would be remembered for, Pamela thought it would be her dedication to “duty, steadfastness and interest in people. Kate and William have got it too.”
In case you missed it, a photographer recently revealed what happened when he called Queen Elizabeth a “girl” during a photoshoot.
