“I had no defense. That’s what chemo does — it strips you of all your immune system. I had nothing to fight it,” he told the outlet. “COVID made my cancer look like nothing.”
Jeff went on to say he was in the hospital for nearly five months and grappled with pain so intense he was unable to roll over without getting a nurse to help him with his oxygen supply.
“I was pretty close to dying. The doctors kept telling me, ‘Jeff, you’ve got to fight. You’re not fighting.’ I was in surrender mode. I was ready to go. I was dancing with my mortality,” he shared.
His health improved after receiving convalescent plasma treatment, which utilizes blood from people who have already recovered from an illness.
“I started taking baby steps,” Jeff said, adding that he began doing physical therapy to get back in shape.
He also reflected on the positives he got from the scary experience, noting that the situation allowed him to spend time with his wife, their daughters, and grandchildren.
“Who would say, ‘I’d love some cancer and give me a dose of COVID’? But my ability to receive all the love and give it was just heightened,” the actor said. “Everything was turned up in the most beautiful way.”
Jeff first announced in the fall of 2020 that he was diagnosed with lymphoma and has been updating his fans throughout his battle. In September 2021, he revealed that he was in remission.
