Doctors from Boston University had been studying the former NFL star’s brain after his tragic death last year. His cause of death, while not made official at this time, seems to be from a seizure. Demaryius apparently began experiencing seizures after a 2019 car accident.

Neuropathologist Dr. Ann McKee, who was part of the team studying the football star’s brain, emphasized that CTE was not his cause of death.

“CTE itself does not cause death. You don’t die from CTE,” she said (via ESPN). “What CTE does is it changes your behavior and your personality.”

Family members did say that he seemed to suffer from some of the symptoms associated with CTE during his final years.

“His mood would change, and he would also isolate himself sometimes,” his mother, Katina Stuckey Smith, said. “He was, like, ‘Mom, I don’t know what’s going on with my body. You know, I gotta get myself together,’ and he said, ‘I don’t feel like myself anymore.’”

He retired from football in June 2021.

CTE seems to be related to contact sports and can only be diagnosed after death. It was the subject of the 2015 film Concussion starring Will Smith.

Our continued thoughts are with Demaryius Thomas‘ family and loved ones.
