'Stranger Things' Season 4 Vol. 2 Spoilers: Which Fan-Favorite Character Died in the Season Finale?

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR STRANGER THINGS SEASON 4 VOLUME 2!

The highly-anticipated second half of Stranger Things season 4 has officially hit Netflix and we finally know which character didn’t make it out of the finale alive.

The finale picked up with Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Murray (Brett Gelman), Yuri (Nikola Duricko) and Dmitri (Tom Wlaschiha) in Russia, where Hopper and Joyce share a long-awaited romantic moment that is interrupted by a phone call in which they learn the kids are in trouble.

Elsewhere, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Will (Noah Schnapp), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), and Argyle (Eduardo Franco) book a flight via payphone. Eleven has realized that she shares the same ability to control Max’s mind as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) has, but she’ll need a sensory deprivation tank to pull it off.

The rest of the team in Hawkins – Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Steve (Joe Keery), Robin (Maya Hawke), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max (Sadie Sink), Eddie (Joseph Quinn), Dustin (Gavin Matarazzo), and Erica (Priah Ferguson) – come up with a four-phase plan to defeat Vecna. Everyone except for Max, Lucas and Erica use the portal to the Upside-Down in Eddie’s trailer to hunt down Vecna, after which Max baits Vecna into controlling her. Eleven also attempts to connect to Max’s mind, but struggles to find the one where Max is hiding from Vecna.

A power struggle between the two ensues and Vecna manages to snap a few of Max’s limbs before Eleven is able to restrain him. Nancy, Steve, and Robin find Vecna in the Upside Down and set him on fire, allowing them to escape.

While Eddie is the only major character to die in the finale, having been overtaken by the Upside Down’s bat monsters in the final battle, Max’s fate is definitely ambiguous. She’s seen waking up in the Creel house with her limbs shattered and eyes foggy, as Lucas calls for help. The last time we see her is in a coma, with no promise from her doctors that she’ll push through.

It’s also unclear whether or not Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) is actually gone for good. While he was shot by a military sniper, he also survived a Demogorgon attack back in season 1.

Fans will have to wait until season 5 to find out what happens to the Stranger Things crew next. In the mean time, find out what the Duffer Brothers say fans can expect from the fifth and final season.
