Brittney Griner's Appeal Is Denied By Russian Regional Court

Brittney Griner‘s appeal of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession was denied by a Russian regional court on Tuesday (October 25).

The 31-year-old WNBA star was sentenced in August after police found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport on February 17.

Brittney was given a nine-year sentence after pleading guilty, arguing that she had been prescribed cannabis for her pain and had inadvertently packed it.

The eight-time All-Star center and two-time Olympic gold medalist filed an appeal while the US State Department declared her to be “wrongfully detained.”

“We are aware of the news out of Russia that Brittney Griner will continue to be wrongfully detained under intolerable circumstances after having to undergo another sham judicial proceeding today. President Biden has been very clear that Brittney should be released immediately,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement.

The court also noted that the time Brittney will have to serve in prison will be recalculated with her time in pretrial detention taken into account. One day in pretrial detention will be counted as 1.5 days in prison, so she will have to serve approximately eight years in prison.
