This is the first movie since Will slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards. Will is banned from attending the Oscars ceremony for 10 years, but he is still eligible to be nominated and win.
Emancipation was inspired by a real-life story of a man who became known as “Whipped Peter.”
At the film’s first screening, Will said, “Throughout my career, I’ve turned down many films that were set in slavery. I never wanted to show us like that. And then this picture came along. And this is not a film about slavery. This is a film about freedom. This is a film about resilience. This is a film about faith.”
