General Hospital (GH) spoilers note there’s a massive wedge right now between Maxie Jones and Lulu Spencer, and at the very core of this drama is a man, Nathan West (Ryan Paevey).
As conflicted as Lulu feels about falling in love with her best friend’s husband, actress Alexa Havins Bruening was worried about how this would affect her character and ‘fan hate’. Still, the good news is that fellow co-star, Kirsten Storms, helped her deal with this along the way.
Alexa Havins Bruening Had Concerns
During an interview with Soap Opera Digest (SOD), Havins relayed how worried she was about Lulu’s character being damaged with this new romance, especially in light of how many fans held her responsible for the chaos that she created during the Gio Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza) adoption reveal.
Lulu caused a tremendous amount of pain for Gio, Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton), and Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna), so how would this new storyline bode?
Havins tells SOD, “I know I had a lot of Lulu hate. Lulu was a bit like a wrecking ball, and she could have been a lot gentler.”
Regarding the Gio storyline, Havins goes on to say “It just caused so much drama across the canvas and I was happy to step in and do the hard job going, ‘Well, I know the audience isn’t going to like me, but I’m gonna go and do the best job I can as an actor to make really good scenes!’”
Still, off the cusp of that Gio storyline, Havis worried that as Lulu’s bond with Nathan got more intense, so would the hate for Lulu. The actress tells SOD, “The more scripts that came through, I was like, ‘Oh no, what are we doing? I just dug myself out of the redemption hole from Gio!’”
Kirsten Storms To The Rescue
When Storms returned to filming after her six-month break, Havins had a chat with the Maxie actress, and Kirsten helped ease her co-star’s concern. Havins notes, “A lot of the conflict between Lulu and Maxie was before I was playing Lulu.”

She went on to say, “… Kirsten was telling me, ‘No, no, this makes so much sense for Maxie and Lulu!’” Storms told Havins some of the past issues Maxie and Lulu dealt with, namely how Maxie offered to be a surrogate to Dante and Lulu, only to end up carrying a child that was biologically hers and Damian Spinelli’s (Bradford Anderson) – Georgie Spinelli (Lily Fisher) – but still making them think Georgie was theirs.
Havins also noted that Storms talked about how Lulu and Maxi’s relationship is close and loving, but in many ways it is also contentious.
Lulu and Maxie do have a sisterly relationship, and while it can get harsh and heated, they always end up back in each other’s good graces.
Storms’ perspective almost gave Havins the permission she needed to fully lean into this sticky storyline. With that said, while things are a mess now between Lulu and Maxie, it probably won’t stay that way for long. Havins tells SOD, “I would think that nothing could rock this friendship, from what I’ve heard about their history.”
She adds, “No matter what, they will always be there for each other. Even if it takes time, even if there’s some hurt along the way, I don’t think Lulu would ever walk away from Maxie without a fight.”
