Soap Operas have been a tv staple for years, some of them have been on the air for decades. Unfortunately, in recent years, television programs have been changing and soaps have been affected badly by these changes.
Recent numbers have soap fans truly worried about the genre after all these years. Are soaps a dying breed? Could be soon be seeing the end of daytime drama?
Could Television Become A Thing Of The Past?
Most of our current soap operas have been around for decades. General Hospital, who just celebrated 63 years, is now the current oldest soap on the air. GH first appeared on April 1, 1963.
Guiding Light, is the only soap that lasted longer than our current front running which was around for 72 years including 15 years on NBC radio with 4 years of concurrent broadcast.
New soap opera occasionally appear but the four major soaps on air today have been around for over 39 years. The Bold and The Beautiful celebrated 39 years on March 23.
A new soap, Beyond The Gates, debuted just last year. Of course, BTG has been renewed once so its future seems promising currently.
American Soaps Have Been Disappearing
Soap fans have had a reason to be concerned at times because it seems that American soaps may not have a place in modern television.
Years ago, networks were willing to put money into soaps, often doing storylines that were shot in different cities and involving music from popular stars as well.
Soaps centered around supercouples who had their own songs and fans were very invested in these characters. Unfortunately, over the years, soap budgets have been slashed and more options have arisen for fans to access programs that have lead to a lot of cancelations.
In reality, The OJ Simpson Trial in 1995 had a very bad affect on soaps as fans stopped watching after months of preemptions.
Are Soaps Beginning To Rebound?
Despite the difficulties of the past, it appears that the daytime genre is posting gains in 2026 offering hope of a rebound in soap viewership. Soap fans are certainly happy to see how well the network soaps are doing currently.
“The Young and the Restless crossed the three-million-viewer threshold for eight straight weeks through March 2026, a gain of 290,000 over the same week in 2025. The Bold and the Beautiful earned 2.947 million viewers that same week, up 346,000 over the same week last year. Through mid-March 2026, General Hospital crossed the two-million-viewer mark in ten out of straight eleven weeks.”

Soaps Are Currently Beating Out The Competition
At one time, daytime talk shows were considered competition for soap operas. According to Soap Opera Magazine, “syndicated talk shows like The Kelly Clarkson Show and Sherri had been coming to an end when shows like this previously took over daytime slots throughout the 2000s and 2010s.”
When it comes to soaps, it is simply economics, as the magazine noted, “a single episode of a premium streaming series could cost 12 to 15 million dollars. Around 30 million dollars is the estimated cost of a full year of a soap.”
Soaps also offer more security to their actors. With episodes airing five days a week, soap actors have more job security in a sense. Soap actors come and go but several current soaps starts have been around for decades. Perhaps soaps are truly the way to go these days.
