It’s getting hard to convince non-techies that there’s not a tiny little AI person inside their phone, and Meta Muse didn’t help with its new cutesy mascot named Jolly. Read on for more details.

AI Gets A Cute Makeover

It’s catching on, and fans of artificial agents seem happy that the mascot seems less like intimidating technology and more like something cute and cuddly. Remember Pip, the 12-day-old agent that went looking for paid work to earn the tokens it needed to keep operating?

Well, that was a tearjerker for some folks. Imagine a cute little mascot running into trouble? There could be real tears shed, I kid you not.

According to Business Insider, “Jolly joins a growing group of creatures vying for the hearts and minds of potential AI users.”

The outlet mentioned Grok’s tiny alien named “Groklet.” It also talked about OpenAI’s less cute round, mouthless dots and “the fluffy Genspark lobster.”

The article noted the irony of the trend because there are a lot of folks out there who genuinely fear the end of civilization by super-intelligence.

But Will You Trust It To Shop?

In another article by the outlet that was carried by AOL, the rather sterile environment of artificial agents is moving on, and Meta Muse offers to take over your shopping tasks. But not everyone is buying into it.

The bot claims to be able to undertake everything “from beginning to end: researching items, comparing prices, and checking out on your behalf.”

Not Everyone Is Ready

However, no matter how cute and cuddly it might be, there mught be some resistance to it. The outlet noted that “Only 7% said they would allow agents to make purchases without their approval.”

Meanwhile, Hindustan Times reported that “The artificial intelligence (AI) industry is keen to sell autonomous software that can be set up to carry out multi-step tasks on a user’s behalf.”

The report also explained the difference between traditional AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini. An agent, unlike an ordinary AI, won’t wait around for you to initiate a conversation. Instead, AI agents can get on with whatever you ask them to do and act on your behalf.

The appeal of sending a cute and fluffy little clever fella out there to do mundane tasks might win people over simply because, well, it’s cute. But notably, you need to give it access and permissions. Folks, maybe keep your password secret from the kids!

Why Cute AI Works

Apparently, people get happy and cute things stimulate us. Business Insider cited Joshua Paul Dale, who founded the niche academic field “Cute Studies,” as saying:

Seeing something cute stimulates the pleasure centers in your brain before you’ve even had a chance to think about it… You’re predisposed to act socially towards something that you find cute.

While some folks are enamored with Jolly and the tiny little agents, the developers know the psychology behind it.

Other, perhaps more jaded folks, might prefer to stick with an AI assistant that doesn’t try and make us feel good, and just gets on with the job of helping folks navigate the complexities of work and social life.
