It’s been a week for unusual things going on in the ocean, and shortly after a small shark was spotted in New Jersey’s streets, another story arrived about a two-headed turtle. Read on to find out more and see a video about it.
A Rare Turtle
In Massachusetts, a wildlife center cares for a rare diamondback terrapin born with two heads. While it might give you a jump scare if you ever come across one, it is an unusual sighting. The center noted that it’s only ever seen two cases of what is known as bicephaly.
There were previous discoveries, and back in 2022, CNBC Television reported on another two-headed creature that was also found in Cape Cod.

The current case of a two-headed turtle seems very notable because diamondback terrapins are a threatened species in Massachusetts. According to The Independent, “A rare two-headed turtle has been found in Massachusetts.” The outlet also confirmed that “The hatchling was discovered in Cape Cod.”
It Will Be Monitored
The hatchling won’t be released back into the wild. Having two heads reduces its odds of avoiding predators, so specialists are keeping it safe at the center.
The Smithsonian Magazine covered the story under the headline “Two Heads Are Better Than One: Rare, Double-Headed Turtle Hatchling Discovered on Cape Cod.” The website noted that “The tiny diamondback terrapin was brought to a wildlife center on September 17.”
Meanwhile, KHOU 11 also covered the story on YouTube, and viewers learned that veterinarians will keep a close eye on the little creature. It needs careful monitoring for a rather bizarre reason. Bicephaly can leave one head more aggressive than the other.
Staff noticed early on that one side showed a different personality during feeding time.
Viewers React
Of course, lighthearted interesting news tends to generate lighthearted comments. So KHOU 11’s video saw one viewer quip, “That reminds me, I went to school with this guy who had… umm… never mind…”
Another person joked, “Wow! Does that mean double the soup?”
Someone else responded to that comment, saying, “I can’t imagine eating a turtle with one head, never mind two lol.”
Well, it isn’t unknown for folks to eat turtle soup, and they are still served in places like Louisiana where it’s known as Creole soup. But they don’t make a habit of cooking up rare diamondback terrapins.
Other places where turtle soup is eaten a lot include China, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and Indonesia, per Discover Real Texas Food.
One person wrote a bit more seriously, “may it live with dignity.”
Hopefully the little two-headed turtle will live a long and happy life and that the second head doesn’t get overly aggressive with the other one.
