Shakira is speaking out about the Spanish government accusing her of tax fraud.
The case was first reported on in December 2018, when Spanish prosecutors charged her with failure to pay taxes on her 2012 to 2014 income. The singer denied any wrongdoing during her testimony in June 2019.
It was reported back in May that she had been denied an appeal in the case, upholding a ruling in which a judge said there was “sufficient evidence of criminality” for the case to go to trial. While she contends she did not live in Spain during that time, the prosecutor’s document alleges that Shakira was a resident in Spain between 2012 and 2014, and in May of 2012, she bought a house in Barcelona which became a family home for herself, her partner and their son born in Spain in 2013.
The singer also just rejected a plea deal from the prosecutor’s office to close the case.
