Hiking the Appalachian Trail seems like a great break from the rush of city life. Naturally, there are plenty of places to explore, given that it stretches for thousands of miles. Did you know that the 1972 movie, Deliverance starring Burt Reynolds was made about it? In the movie, folks saw the beauty of the area, but also watched some weird things go down. And these days, that movie sparks part of the dark folklore that surrounds the place.

Strange People & Myths

In the remoter places of the mountains that stretch from Georgia through to Maine, some folks keep a wary eye out for strange folk and even stranger happenings. Look, for most people, they go there because quiet and nature sits on their bucket list. However, others go there because they feel drawn to the myths and legends associated with those old forests.

On social media, sometimes, people talk about weird and creepy experiences. And you can watch some of that in the video further down in this article. Of course, it’s possible that decades of city living simply dampened our comfort zone when it comes to nature.

However, who doesn’t love a story about the supernatural? And the idea of a secret society of people living there as portrayed in Deliverance might also entice those people keen to check it out for themselves.

Most likely, if you randomly browsed your feed on TikTok or YouTube, you came across some strange encounters. Real or not? Well, that’s up to your imagination in many instances. However, some real-life cases seem relatable enough to make you go “Hmmm.”

The Missing Tales

In recent years, the “Missing 411” cases trended a lot, and they relate to people who vanished in the woods. Meanwhile, other people describe the Appalachian Trail as giving a feeling of being secretly watched from the treeline.

Interestingly, plenty of those stories had their roots in Deliverance. If you don’t know the plot, it involved mysterious people who lived there. And, they really didn’t like hikers stomping around in their backyard.

Well, some regions seem remote, and stories like those from the movie could easily stick in your mind, right?

Naturally, it’s not all legend, and some missing persons cases help to cement the idea of the strange and paranormal. For example, The Observer on Substack talks about Spence Field, an area of meadows where Dennis Martin went missing in the late 1960s.

Other cases come to mind. For instance, Emma Bowers, 5, disappeared while picking wild berries. Similarly, Alvan Diggan, 3, did the same thing. While they didn’t die, they were oddly found far away from where folks last saw them. How did they move so far at such tender ages?

Travel Trends Change

Currently, travel trends seem a bit different, and for sure, it seems that people prefer very immersive experiences. Naturally, the myths about the “Missing 41” and the Deliverance story really grab the interest of those who look for more than the usual. So, sometimes they get off the beaten track in search of the unexplained and the paranormal.

Actually, the adventure also involves many days of hiking a long  way to find the places where the strange quiet unnerves people. Some people came out of the Appalachian Trail with stories about disturbed vegetation that couldn’t have been made by animals. Meanwhile, geographical features sometimes seem too human and not natural.

Appalachian Trail – A Crossover With Yellowstone

Strange silences and weird sensations don’t seem to be limited to the trail. In fact, we recently covered a story about what became known as “The Oz factor” in Yellowstone.

In that instance, people sometimes reported a strange and sudden silence. Even the birds stopped calling, and insects disappeared. Similar to Yellowstone, others reported feeling or hearing a strange hum from underground.

Older Than The Sea

Did you know that the mountains where today’s Appalachian Trail runs arrived before oceans happened? Long before humans enjoyed the outdoors as a massive recreational area, life in various forms existed there. So perhaps that feeling of something ancient and intangible today also helped create dark legends.

Of course, the skeptics weigh in on the supernatural, bringing in a bit of a downer. But hey, who wants a scientific explanation when there are way more exciting things to think about, like things supernatural, secret societies, and inexplicable disappearances?

Leaving The Safe Campsites Behind

While many families enjoy safe and attractive campsites along the Appalachian Trail, others hit the more remote areas off the main trail. Perhaps, they hope to find that strange silence, or even stumble onto a secret tribe in the deep dark forests. Oh, and live to tell the story.
