Security forces don’t always rely on large working dogs, and a new story involves a tiny Chihuahua named Comando who just joined Mexico’s National Guard. Read on to find out more.

Newbie Canine Recruit

While you might expect security units to stick strictly to heavy-duty breeds, dog-lovers know that smaller dogs can still find a role. What makes the story even more special is that Comando isn’t a typical working dog at all.

According to Reuters, the 13-month-old Chihuahua has officially signed on as the force’s smallest member. Adopted roughly six months back, he originally belonged to an elderly couple who couldn’t keep taking care of him.

The Daily Maverick noted that the pup is “outfitted with miniature goggles, a fitted tactical vest, a helmet, and even a petite head-mounted camera.”

Weighing in at only 7 kg (15 lb 7 oz), he certainly isn’t imposing. But he looked very professional when ABC News shared about him on Facebook this week.

The Pup Has A Job

Unlike the agency’s 350 operational canines, which are usually larger breeds like German shepherds, Comando isn’t mainly focused on heavy tactical duties. However, he makes for a useful tiny mascot.

Per Reuters, folks are likely to see him at schools and events held on special days like Mexico’s Independence Day parade. But he’s not just ornamental, because he’s also been trained to work as a search-and-rescue dog.

While the Chihuahua probably can’t shift heavy masonry during rescue work, he could be very useful in confined spaces.

Time and Effort in Training

Lieutenant Debora Hernandez told news outlets that the pup’s presence helps officers form a warmer connection with local communities. It seems like a great idea to win the hearts and minds of children who are likely to meet the little K9.

After all, it’s not all that easy to look intimidating and invincible with a tiny dog trotting next to you.

As for his other duties, plenty of hard work went into his training.

Readers React

When ABC News Australia shared the story on Facebook, people had a chance to comment on the Mexican National Guard’s tiny member of the force.

One person wrote, “Chihuahuas are the most underrated and maligned little dogs. They are super smart, loyal and lion-hearted. Just some owners over-indulge them and let them think they’re top dog, which makes them super anxious and defensive.” They added, “I’d have another Chihuahua in a heartbeat.”

Here are a few more responses from the discussion area:

  • “As it is a Chihuahua no good will come of this.”
  • “He looks very professional.”
  • “Stay safe little Comando!”
