Something strange clawed its way out of a social media post about a year ago, and as it’s about urban legends, myths, and history, it’s worth taking a look at the infamous Pendle Witch Trials of 1612 in Lancashire, UK. Read on for more details.
A Thread About Urban Legends
The Reddit thread arrived on the r/paranormal sub and folks talked about their own urban myths and other spooky things in modern day culture. One poster talked about Pendle Hill. Per Engole Info, the trial was well documented:
The twelve accused lived in the area surrounding Pendle Hill in Lancashire, and were charged with the murders of ten by the use of witchcraft.
A prime accuser was a nine-year-old who implacted the whole of her family. “Of the eleven who went to trial, nine women and two men, ten were found guilty and executed by hanging.
A Modern Relative?
It’s interesting because it seems that a modern descendant saw the post and entered the conversation. They claimed they’re blood-related to one of the ten folks hanged. And yeah, anyone can say anything online. But, this particular connection seemed rather interesting.
They dropped this little bombshell:
I’m a descendant of one of the ten witches found guilty & hanged.

However, her mom, who did the research, never mentioned the other modern mythology about UFO sightings and weird happenings in the Pendle Hill area. But questioned by others she revealed, “Anne Redferne is in my family tree.”
Anne Redferne A Victim or Witch?
So who was this woman? According to historical records, six of the folks in the Pendle Witch Trials came from two rival families, each led by an elderly matriarch. Anne Redferne was the daughter of Anne Whittle (aka Chattox), one of the accused.
Unlike others who confessed under pressure, Anne refused to the end. In fact, she never broke. Unfortunately, that all came to nothing because they hanged her at Gallows Hill in Lancaster anyway. Apparently, allegations that she made a clay figurine was enough to convince folks that she used witchcraft to murder someone.
Ghosts & Other Weird Sightings
Today, Pendle Hill attracts tourists, and the self-proclaimed descendant now wants to put a tour on their “bucket list.” The tourists and those who venture there sometimes report shadow figures, disembodied voices, ghostly footsteps, and even the sensation of being touched or strangled. While that’s all classic modern urban legend stuff, other interesting phenomena allegedly happened in the area.
The area also became a UFO hotspot. In the past, strange lights and silent craft allegedly drifted over the moor. So, it seems that this place on the planet swallowed up lots of witches and then spat out lights in the sky. Coincidence? Maybe. But the reports keep piling up.
A Long Shadow
It seems a bit wild when a centuries old execution collides with a Reddit comment. Obviously, we can’t verify the user’s real name. But, the fact they named Anne Redferne specifically, doesn’t seem random. So, either they did their homework to make the claim on the sub, which seems weird, or they really are related to the unfortunate Anne Redferne.
What are your thoughts? Did you ever think about the descendants of those folks who lost their lives back in history? Do you agree that given the weird reports in the Pendle Hill area, it might be a surreal experience if the Redditor ever gets to go on a tour there?
