The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) has terrorized the Newman family across the decades. But he’s not dead yet, despite Sienna Bacall’s (Tamara Braun) claim that she killed him.
Devoted viewers recall that Sharon Newman’s (Sharon Case) boyfriend wasn’t Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) way back in 1994. That’s the year that the Sharon character debuted, and Nick was SORAS’d (soap opera rapid aging syndrome) from a boy to a high-schooler.
Matt became the guy who criminally attacked Sharon, in what was a very serious storyline. Nick came to her rescue, and one of Y&R’s all-time couples was born.
It’s Been A Long Time Since High School
Case became the third actor to portray Sharon in a short period in 1994. Her enduring run on this soap opera speaks to the subjective nature of casting and how picking the right actor can make all the difference.
Morrow has portrayed the late teen and adult Nick for the past thirty-two years as well. His chemistry with Case was undeniable, but it also led to only one marriage for those characters. That is highly unusual, considering the many times so many characters in Genoa City, Wisconsin, have remarried through the years.
Eddie Cibrian (Matt) initially portrayed this alter ego and established his villainous nature. Years later, daytime veteran Rick Hearst (Matt) took the role in a new direction with a face change through plastic surgery. He faked his death to try to frame Nick, and that failed, which set up this year’s comeback.
Today’s Matt Clark Is Wiser And Meaner
Howarth’s addition to the cast was a pleasant surprise because of the many years he worked on General Hospital, One Life to Live, and All My Children. This actor has incredible chops and arguably ranks with the greats of his era.
His portrayal of Matt is so transfixing that fans have a vexing problem. Most viewers likely don’t want to see Matt continuously torture the Newmans or Sienna. Yet, his crimes have to be punished, and that means he’ll either be apprehended and finally kept in prison or perish.
Being older, wiser, and meaner means that Matt elevated his badness into illicit substance dealing and illegal gambling. He also wanted to actually kill Nick this time around and add Sharon, Noah Newman (Lucas Adams), and Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) to his list of intended victims. Thankfully, that effort to kill them in the abandoned gas station explosion failed.
Sienna Bacall Didn’t Get The Job Done
Sienna offered herself in exchange for Matt stopping his revenge tour against the Newmans. He rejected that plea and used his smartphone to detonate the remote location he used to store his unlawful materials.
Seeing Matt awaken in the desert means the next chapter in this saga will play out through the spring. So, the battle might shift back to GC because the Newmans need to be back home, and presume he’s deceased.
Days to weeks could pass until the anticipated next attack takes place. Major kudos to the writing staff for reviving a character the fans hadn’t seen in a quarter-century and making him relevant, raucous, and riveting.
